Bungoma Senator David Wakoli has faulted Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for failing to address poor sanitation and insecurity in the capital.

Wakoli warned that Nairobi’s declining standards risk tarnishing Kenya’s image abroad.

Speaking in the Senate during debate on county accountability, Wakoli said Nairobi residents are grappling with robberies, darkness and filthy streets in the Central Business District.

Describing the city as “the face of the country in shame.”he linked Nairobi’s challenges to broader governance failures across counties.

He urged leaders to prioritize investments in education and skills development instead of flashy projects driven by selfish interests and corruption.

Wakoli called for heavy investment in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) programs, noting that nursery schools remain marginalized in infrastructure and teaching materials.

He pressed counties to fully implement ECDE policies to give young learners a strong start.

The senator also urged county governments to equip vocational training centers, saying they are vital in giving young people practical skills for self-reliance and employment.

Backing stronger oversight, Wakoli proposed that Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) be granted greater powers to scrutinize county executives.
However he cited ODM leader Raila Odinga’s recent defense of Governor Sakaja as improper saying accountability must not be compromised by political influence.

Wakoli’s remarks underscored growing concerns over wastage in devolution, with senators pressing for stricter oversight to safeguard taxpayers’ money.
