The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has approved murder charges against six individuals over the death of teacher and blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang.
Ojwang died in police custody earlier this month. A day after his arrest, he was found unconscious in a Nairobi cell. Police initially claimed he had taken his own life, but an autopsy revealed fatal head injuries consistent with assault.
In a statement Monday, the ODPP said the Director of Public Prosecutions had on June 10 directed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to investigate the death.
IPOA submitted its findings on June 22. A team of senior prosecutors reviewed the file and recommended murder charges.
Three police officers — OCS Samson Kiprotich Talaam, Constable James Mukhwana and Peter Kimani — and three civilians will face charges. The civilians are John Ngige Gitau, Gin Ammitou Abwao and Brian Mwaniki Njue.
They are expected to appear at Kibera High Court on Monday.
The ODPP said it is committed to justice and the rule of law.
