WEBUYE WEST, Kenya (June 23, 2025).
Businessman and philanthropist Joseph Lendrix Waswa has launched an aggressive grassroots campaign to unseat Webuye West MP Dan Sitati Wanyama in the 2027 general election.
Waswa, known for his charitable work through the Joseph Waswa Foundation, is focusing his political bid on service delivery and social impact.
His campaign slogan centers on “development that touches the common mwananchi.”
Wanyama, who first entered Parliament in 2013 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), is serving his third term. He has maintained a strong rural support base, but Waswa is looking to turn the tide.
Waswa has rolled out a series of community projects across the constituency, including free medical camps, bursary programs, and seed donations.
In the last year alone, over 10,000 residents have benefited from his health initiatives.
He has also launched an ambulance service, distributed farm inputs to more than 8,000 farmers, and pledged Ksh 2 million in bursaries to needy students.
In February, Waswa distributed umbrellas and aprons to over 2,000 women in the informal trade sector.
He later opened a foundation office in Webuye town and deployed volunteers to register residents for the Social Health Authority scheme.
Waswa says his actions are aimed at addressing gaps left by the incumbent, whom he accuses of neglecting grassroots development.
While Wanyama has not publicly responded to Waswa’s challenge, political observers say the race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in Bungoma County.
With less than two years to the polls, Waswa is betting on his philanthropic track record and hands-on approach to win over voters.
Whether his generosity on the ground will translate into electoral success in 2027 remains to be seen.
Ends.
