As it was the custom of Jesus Christ to retreat to the mountains for prayer, more than two thousand years later, many believers continue to follow in his footsteps, seeking spiritual connection and divine intervention from elevated grounds.
In Bungoma County, a section of residents believe their problems find solutions when they pray on top of Sang’alo Hill.
The hill has increasingly become a spiritual destination, drawing worshippers from different religions across Kenya and even neighboring countries.
As one approaches Sang’alo Hill, the atmosphere is unmistakable.
The air is filled with the sound of intense prayers, singing, praising, and speaking in tongues, creating a deeply spiritual environment that welcomes visitors long before they reach the summit.
The hill has attracted people from all walks of life, united by a common belief in the power of prayer.
Among them is Pastor George Wafula, who leads groups of faithful in prayer sessions on the hill. According to Wafula, the mountain holds special significance for believers.
“It is here on the mountain where we believe God hears us more clearly and answers prayers instantly,” he stated.
The belief is not limited to locals.
Pastor Francis, a visitor from neighboring Uganda, says the practice is rooted in biblical tradition.
“During the time of Jesus, he would go to the mountain to seek God. He fasted for forty days and nights, and when he came down, he carried great glory and changed the world. That is the same spirit I am following in seeking God,” he said.
For many, Sang’alo Hill is more than just a place of prayer—it is a site of transformation and adventure.
Some residents believe that complete forgiveness is attainable here, while others claim to have experienced healing and deliverance after spending nights in prayer.
Former practitioners of witchcraft who have since renounced what they describe as dark practices say they have found redemption and a new spiritual path through their experiences on the hill.
Despite these testimonies, questions remain: Are the claims that prayers are answered instantly on Sang’alo Hill grounded in faith alone, or is there something more that believers have yet to understand?
For some believers, the answers lie in personal experience. A young local woman recalls how her life changed after praying on the hill.
“There was a time I could not afford school fees,” she says. “But when I came here and prayed, everything happened miraculously. Today, I am an educated person in society.”
While the hill continues to inspire hope and faith among its visitors, the journey is not without challenges.
Those who climb Sang’alo Hill often endure harsh weather conditions, including cold nights and strong winds.
There are also concerns about safety, with reports of encounters with wild animals in the area.
