Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has launched a sweeping countywide livestock and poultry distribution programme aimed at empowering women and youth while boosting household incomes and food security.

Speaking during the launch in Milima Ward, Tongaren Constituency, Lusaka said the initiative forms part of his administration’s broader strategy to strengthen grassroots economic empowerment and expand agribusiness opportunities across the county.

“This programme is designed to enhance food security, create sustainable livelihoods, and stimulate agricultural productivity at the community level,” Lusaka said.

The rollout, which will be implemented across all wards, includes the distribution of 335 livestock comprising dairy heifers, dairy goats, and piglets.

Additionally, 85,799 improved kienyeji chicks will be issued to organized groups to promote poultry farming.

In a further boost to aquaculture, the county has also distributed 15,000 fish fingerlings, alongside 32 incubators and 22,000 fertilized eggs to expand local hatchery capacity.

To support value addition and feed sustainability, beneficiaries will also access two pellet machines and ten feed formulation machines.

In Milima Ward, 18 women and youth groups each received a dairy heifer, while 30 groups collectively benefited from more than 11,000 improved kienyeji chicks.

Lusaka emphasized the inclusivity of the programme, noting that it targets vulnerable yet enterprising groups to ensure equitable economic growth.

“Empowering women and youth is key to building resilient, community-driven economies. This initiative will not only increase food production but also improve livelihoods,” he said.

The county government has committed to providing continuous technical support and extension services to ensure the programme’s sustainability as it is scaled up across Bungoma.

The initiative is expected to generate a ripple effect on rural incomes, positioning agriculture as a central pillar in the county’s socio-economic transformation.
